Our Concept  >>>

   

 

      

In conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007 and the 50th Anniversary of Independence, IHC is a harmonica (music) carnival beyond boundaries, putting people from indigenous background together and spread the message of peace and harmony.

 We are endeavored to take this opportunity to demonstrate the breaking through of harmonica performance to the mass. The industry itself is hunger for a leap of change in its performing skills and art. So we will take the lead, here in Malaysia.

 

 
   

Organizers: Malaysian Chinese Cultural Society

Established in 1977, Malaysia Chinese Cultural Society not only plays an important role in preserving Chinese culture, it is also a non profit organization actively involve in promoting cultural exchange between the multiethnic communities of the country. MCCS has been supporting and organizing more than 300 cultural events in the past 30 years, aiming to enhance the well being of a peaceful and harmonious society.

 

 
   

CO-ORGANIZER: HARMONICA WORLD

Harmonica World is established in 1990, founded by Malaysia¨s well known harmonica virtuoso Mr. Chong Ah Kow. Harmonica World promotes harmonica related music events; it also acts as a liaison of local and international harmonica players. Harmonica World has organized various competitions and events in the past 16 years. One of its highest merits was gained when it hosted the 2nd Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival in 1998, in conjunction with the 16th Common Wealth Games held in Kuala Lumpur, which has gained great success. It also provided a record breaking performance, leading 460 harmonica players to play for the 46th Anniversary of Independence; in 2005, Chong was invited to perform for the soundtrack of the movie <Third Generation>- a Black Box¨s Picture production. He was also invited by Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim, Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Malaysia, to perform at Istana Kebudayaan.

 

 

 

EVENT MANAGEMENT: M HARMONY

M Harmony, a new division of Harmonica World specializing in planning and coordinating events. It also endeavored in promoting harmonica and music education. M Harmony, leaded by three young companions, is determined to bring a revolutionary form of harmonica performances to the audience.

Our Activities

The two main programs of IHC 2007 are the Harmonica Competition of Creativity and Open Stage Performances. Besides, there will be exhibition as well as the workshop conducted by Jens Bunge!our Jazz Harmonica maestro from Germany! The detail of the workshop is subjected to change due to the availability of time and venue. Final confirmation will be announced soonest!

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

Breaking news!

The Photographic Society of Malaysia is co organizing a Photographic Contest with us! This is the second photographic competition of harmonica since the 2nd Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival held in 1998, in conjunction with the 16th Common Wealth Games. We are glad to have CANON (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd as our main sponsor of the competition this time!

Open Stage Concert

  • Free style performances. Performers reserve the right in selecting music. The only condition for the performance is it must be a healthy and inspiring.

  • Performance with innovations and creativity is highly appreciated. Collaboration of various musical instruments, costumes and talents is encouraged.

  • Participants are required to prepare a performance of 20-30 minutes (The exact time limit of performance is subject to change with accordance to the situation of the venue and program flow.)

  •  

  • Participants are required to send to us the brief introduction of their organizations (dual lingual plus images), the list of music, description and flow of performances (video demo is highly appreciated), as well as the floor plan and musical instrument rental registration form.

Competition of  Harmonica Creativity

 

          Categories  
   

1.     This competition consists of 2 groups, namely Junior (below 16 years old) and Open group (17 years old and above).

2.     Competitors of Junior group must be born on or after 3 August 1991.
Competitors of Open group must be born on or before 3 August 1991.

3.     There are only 3 categories in this competition, namely Harmonica Solo (all types of harmonica), Harmonica Ensemble and Harmonica Orchestra (11 members or above).

 
     

 

Eligibility

   
   

1.      Only those organizations invited are eligible to participate in this competition.

2.      No restriction on age group.

3.      The organizer reserves the right of final decision on all qualifications.

4.      The finalists must have the carnival pass recognized by the organizer; otherwise they may be disqualified by the organizer.

 
     
     

 

     
 

Regulations of competition

   
     

1.      To distinguish it from earlier competitions, in this competition, the competitors will be judged mainly according to the creativity and visual performances they demonstrate.

2.      We highly appreciate free style performances; competitors are encouraged to combine other musical instruments and talents to compete. The only condition is harmonica has to be the leading instrument.

3.      The content of the performance must be healthy and positive.

4.      For all categories (solo, ensemble or orchestra), the music of entry will be recognized as a representing unit. Each unit is allowed to consist of any number of members.

5.      One competitor can enter more than one category and may appear in more than one entry in a single category.

6.      Every competitor must submit a video demo of complete performance for preliminaries. Subject to a satisfactory standard accepted by the judge panel, the top ranked entries from the preliminary round shall enter the final round to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 3rd August 2007.

7.      All video demos shall be sent to the organizer at the following address before 1st June 2007.

8.      All video demos shall be sent in the form of DVD or VCD with MPEG1, MPEG2 or AVI format.

9.      Competitor shall choose the music for each entry. The playing time must be within 6 minutes.

10.  The organizer reserves the right to shorten the above mentioned time limits according to the number of entries during the final round.

11.  All competitors must stop playing when the time limit is exceeded, which will be signaled by a ring sound.

12.  The organizer reserves the right for any penalty if the time limit is exceeded from the stipulated time frame (Deduction of marks or disqualification).

13.  Competitors of both preliminary and final round will be awarded certificates as recognition. For those who are absent from the carnival in Kuala Lumpur, certificates will not be awarded.

Restrictions on musical instruments and equipments (Final Round)

     
   

1.      Amplification will be provided by the organizer subject to the condition of the venue. The following microphones will be provided:

Dynamic Microphones (For individual purpose- cabled mic: 8, cordless mic: 4) Total: 12

Condenser Microphones (For orchestra purpose): Total: 4

Mic stands- Total: 10

2.      Competitors shall use their own instruments and accessories which are necessary. They shall co-operate and coordinate with the AV team appointed by the organizer. Other musical instruments such as piano, drum set and etc may be provided at an extra charge. Finalists shall state the specific requirements in the Application Form provided later. Detailed terms and conditions of renting are determined through individual negotiation.

3.      The use of music stand is discouraged in this competition. However, it may be provided at am extra charge. Please state the specific requirements in the Application Form.

4.      The organizer will provide adequate chairs in accordance with the requirements.

 
   

 

 
     

 

     
           General guidelines      
   

 

1.      All competitors who enter the final round must possess the carnival pass recognized by the organizer. Kindly refer to the attachment for payment details. The carnival pass will be distributed at a designated registration desk.

2.      The accompaniment CD should be submitted to the designated desk as well.

3.      Competitors shall follow the schedule of competition. Late comers will be disqualified, unless permission is obtained from organizer.

4.      The result of the preliminary round will be announced on 10th June 2007 on our official website. Only finalists will be informed by mail.
