6th Malaysia-Singapore Harmonica Competition

 

National Harmonica Contest
Held on 3 & 4 June in YMCA KL

 

(Kuala Lumpur) The 6th National Harmonica Contest will be held on 3 & 4 June this year in YMCA, Brickfields KL. This year the contest is extended to Singapore to participate.

There are nine categories to be contested. They are Tremolo Harmonica Solo, Tremolo Harmonica Solo with Piano Accompaniment, Chromatic Solo, 10 holes diatonic, Duet, Trio, Ensemble, Group and Orchestra.

The contest is held in line with 6th Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival in Taiwan on 3-6 August 2006.

Our Malaysian delegates had captured many titles at the past few Festivals.

Prior to the festival, a “warm-up” session is usually organised to encourage delegates to do their best.

The organiser is Harmonica World S/B and co-organised by YMCA with the support of Malaysian Artistes Association and Malaysian Chinese Cultural Association and Longlife Magazine.

Besides the contest, various types of harmonicas and instruments, books, CDs, VCD etc will be exhibited during the two days, from 9am to 5pm.

A 10 hole diatonic harmonica learning session will be conducted by Mr. Ho Chee Kin, our own Malaysian harmonica maestro who has won many championships in many international contests.

An opening ceremony will be held on 3 June at 11 am where our own Malaysian champions will perform their master pieces in the forms of solo in Tremolo, Chromatic and Diatonic harmonica, duet, trio, ensemble.

The Bai’s Brother Trio from China and Lee Hea Bong from Korea will fly in to share their skill.

The YMCA Senior Citizens’ Harmonica Band whose members age range from 55 to 92 will play ‘Welcome March’ to kick start the event.

At 2pm on 4 Jun the Grand Final followed by Award Presentation Ceremomy will be another eye opener for the audience.

Objective: To promote harmonica music and raise activities, improve harmonica performing standard, and foster between relationship.

Date: 9am – 5pm, 3rd & 4th June, 2006.  

Venue: YMCA (Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur)    ( www.ymcakl.com/location.htm )

Participation Criteria: For all Malaysian & Singaporean (No limit of age, gender and race)  

Awards:

  • Gold, silver, bronze & excellent prizes.
  • Each prize may be shared by a few personal/ groups based on the standard.
  • Certificates will be awarded to every winner. (1 certificate will be presented to group category, if extra certificates were needed, organizer will duplicate them and a nominal fee will be charged)
  • The winners for gold, silver & bronze awardees will also be presented with a trophy each other than certificates.  

Judges: Harmonica & music maestros are invited to be the judges. The participants should accept the judge’s decision. Their decisions are final.  

Matters concerned:

  1. The competition’s registration counter will be opened 45 minutes before the commencement of the competition starts. The participant or the participants representative must bring the accompaniment CD/MD (solo category), the stage arrangement draft (ensemble & orchestra categories) and registered themselves at the counter before the competition commences.  
  1. Participants should perform according to the arranged schedule. They are prohibited to interrupt the process of the competition. Unpunctuated participants may be disqualified to participate in the competition. However, late comers with unforeseen circumstances or permission from the organizer will be exempted from this rule.  
  1. All participants are advised to collect their participating certificates from the registration counter after their performance. Those who reach the grand final are advice to collect their awards from the organizer’s service counter after the closing ceremony. For group categories, certificates are to be collected only by the representative / learder.  

Rehearsal:

  1. All participants are allowed to utilize the rehearsal rooms, studio and stage provided by the organizers for rehearsals. The availability of the above facilities will be on 1st come 1st serve basis to protect the rights of other participants.
  2. Category No.9 (Orchestra) is entitled to book the rehearsal room with piano facilities (Every session 30 minutes). The participants can only utilize the rehearsal room with piano for the minimum of 2 sessions only.  
  1. All participants can book their rehearsal schedule at the organizer’s service counter. The organizers will produce a rehearsal permit for the participants. The participants can utilize the rehearsal room according to the time stated in the rehearsal permit.  
  1. Those participants who could not present themselves at the rehearsal room 5 minutes after the booking time will be assumed as giving up their booking rights for the rooms. The rehearsal rooms will be given to the subsequent participants who are on the next waiting list.

 Competition Categories:

  1. Tremolo Harmonica Solo (without accompaniment)

Highlights:

Categories 2, 3 & 4: can include a non-harmonica accompanist. Participant’s may use CD & MD accompaniment. The organizer will provide the piano. For other musical instruments the participant should bring his own musical instrument. If there is a need, the organizer may engage local accompanist for the participants. The accompanist engagement contract is based on the agreement between the participant & the organizer. The additional fees incurred for the engagement of the accompanist will be borne by the participant. 

Category 5: ‘Harmonica Duet’ should be consisted of 2 harmonica players. Other musical instruments other than harmonica are prohibited for the performance. 

Category 6: Harmonica Trio should be consisted of a Bass, Chord player and another chromatic, tremolo or 10-holes harmonica player. 

Category 7: Ensemble (4-6 persons) - No participation of conductor. Non-harmonica musical instruments are prohibited for the performance. The pieces should have four or above four parts. 

Category 8: Ensemble (7-13 persons) – No participation of conductor. Non-harmonica musical instruments are prohibited for the performance. The musical piece should have more than five parts. 

Category 9: Orchestra – Conductor participation is permitted. Conductor’s participation is excluded in the number of participants for orchestra category. Can use non-harmonica musical instruments but cannot exceed 1/5 of number of participants.

 

Facilities:

  1. The organizers will provide the PA system facilities.
    • 2 microphones will be provided for solo & duet participants.
    • 3 microphones will be provided for trio participants.
    • 10 microphones will be provided for orchestra participants.
  1. All participants will be using the PA system facilities provided by the organizer. They are prohibited to use their own PA system facilities.
  1. The organizer will provide piano for category No.9. Participants have to bring their own non-harmonica musical instruments.
  1. The organizer will provide orchestra as registered by the participants. A maximum of 30 music stands will be provided to the orchestra participants.
  1. The organizer reserves the final decision on the limitation of the musical instruments, equipment and the number of participants.

 

Rules & Regulations for the Participants

  1. Participant can participate in different categories but, cannot participate 2 times in the same category.
  2. Participant is not allowed to take part in the same category under other name.
  3. The organizer will reserve the final decision on the participant’s qualification.

Speaker: Ho Chee Kin

Demonstration & Teaching

           Ho Chee Kin mastered three types of harmonica playing skills i.e. classical and jazz chromatic harmonica and 10 holes harmonica. Ho Chee Kin obtained remarkable results in harmonica competitions locally and abroad, including 2000, the Chromonica Champion and Champion for Trio in the Open Category in the "Millennium Harmonica Contest" in England, and he was awarded the Overall Champion in the Millennium Harmonica Contest  by IHO. He possessed a Diploma in Contemporary music in 2002. Currently, he is involving himself in music arranging jobs, composing harmonica tunes.
