Jens Bunge¡¡

"We must welcome Jens Bunge to the growing ranks of chromatic harmonica players in jazz.(...) Jens has a round tone and technique, supported by musicianship. Good luck, the road is not easy but you've got the conviction and the equipment."

Toots Thielemans

¡¡

¡¡ ¡¡

Jens Bunge was born on September 24, 1963, in Germany.

At the age of 18, he began to teach himself to play the chromatic harmonica. Influenced by the recordings of Toots Thielemans, he soon found his passion for jazz.

In the mid 80s, while studying theology at the University of Heidelberg (Bunge is an ordained Protestant minister!), he began to perform with local big bands and jazz groups.

The following years saw him as a guest soloist with the Thilo Berg Big Band featuring Ack van Rooyen and Barbara Dennerlein (www.barbaradennerlein.com), with Art Farmer, Bill Ramsey and the German Jazz Orchestra BuJazzO (http://www.bujazzo.de/), conducted by Peter Herbolzheimer.

Being an untiring globetrotter, Jens Bunge has been playing his harmonica on all five continents: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Montreal, Honolulu, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Cape Town are just a few of the locations where he appeared as a featured guest (Picture Gallery).

At the European Harp Festival 1996 and the World Harmonica Festivals 1997 and 2001 in Trossingen, he conducted the workshop "jazz on the chromatic harmonica".

He performed at the gala concerts and was a jury member of the harmonica competitions at the 3rd Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival in Seoul/Korea (2000) and the 4th Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival in Atsugi/Japan (2002).

He is ¨C alternating with Jamey Aebersold - a regular writer for the jazz column of the international magazine "The Harmonica Educator".

By now, Jens Bunge has recorded six CDs under his own name, and appears as a guest on recordings of Ralf Gauck, Peter Lehel, Chantal (http://www.chantal.de/de/html/entrance/) and many others.

Jens Bunge plays mainly a golden HOHNER ¡°Super 64 Chromonica¡± and a ¡°64 Chromonica¡± which has been optimized by Bill Romel, Las Vegas.

BANDS

Jens Bunge currently performs with the following bands:

Jens Bunge & Uli Wagner

harmonica & acoustic guitar

Jens Bunge & Uli Wagner

Founded in 1996, this duo performs mostly at readings, exhibitions, talk shows...

After they had met each other several times and immediately felt that they were musical soul mates, Jens Bunge & Uli Wagner founded
this duo in 1996. Since then they have been performing at readings, exhibitions, talk shows, church concerts and festivals.

  Their repertoire spans:

  •    Jazz & Swing
  •    Latin Jazz and
  •    original compositions

The strength of this duo is their sensitivity in handling different moods. The music creates atmosphere, deepens or contrasts emotions, is sometimes peppy-frolicsome, sometimes meditative-dreamy. Therefore it serves as an ideal frame and support for spoken words, such as readings of poetry, art exhibitions, receptions or even church services.

On request, the duo may be expanded to a complete jazz trio or quartet (including bass and drums).

On request, the duo may be completed to a full jazz quartet.

Chantal

Since 2002 Jens Bunge has been performing with  the instrumental group Chantal (www.chantal.de), playing the harmonica in their extremely successful program „Beatles Strictly Instrumental¡°. Highlights of this co-operation were the live-recordings in the renowned ¡°Cavern Club¡± in Liverpool as well as the recording of a CD at Abbey Road Studios in London.

When I first heard Jens Bunge play in a jazz club, in 1993,  I thought to myself:" That guy has something of Chet Baker!" These melodies, full of emotion, and the floating sound immediately caught my attention.

Nowadays, I enjoy the intuitive understanding between us on stage, and that he is still able to surprise me with something new. A congenial partner for a musical "Pas de Deux".

I first noticed Uli Wagner at a concert in the early 1990s, when - in addition to the bossa nova - he also played jazz standards on the acoustic guitar, instead of on the electric guitar commonly used for this.

After eight years of playing together, I am still impressed with his sensitive, rhythmically and harmonically variable way of accompanying, as well as with his skills as a composer.
